notes and notes

today in class we all took a lot of notes about world population and a bunch of numbers and stuff like immigration and all the Mexicans and Americans and Canadians and stuff. i was surprised that in all of the world, the average birth rate per second is 2.4 per second witch means 145 in a minute and 14000 in am hour! that's a lot of babies! 90% of these new born babies come from developing countries. We also discussed life expectancy, and why men don't live as long as women. It s because of many different reasons, lets start with work and jobs. Men tend to have riskier jobs than women, such as working in a coal mine or being in the military  or construction and many more. Women also usually eat a lot healthier than men and even make smarter decisions! There is more notes but thats all im sharing.

The Test...

We all took a test in class and i was the last one finished. I studied but I think I didn't do well. I hope i'm still able to play soccer. i took two tests on Friday and if i fail both than i'm ineligible to play. I think i did not do well because i was unsure of what to write for the BCR's, It is harder for me to write out my answer but i got all the multiple choice questions right. I don't really feel that i'm the best taker but i will study hard and commit to my work and effort at the John Carroll School.

Nike Talk

In class today we discussed how the minimum wage for Indonesians is now $4.00 but the Nike owners in Indonesia are using military force to make the workers sign something allowing them to be legally paid $3.70 dollars. To stop this madness in Indonesia we can all stop buying Nike products and reducing their income. by cutting the pay for these workers Nike only saves 52,000 dollars. last year, their total income was about 2.5 billion dollars. 52,000 dollars makes no difference to Nike's high standards. Yet it makes a huge difference to the factory workers in Indonesia.
So why does Nike do it?

Truth Behind Nike

Class was very interesting today. We watched a video about Nike, and how much money the factory workers in developing countries are paid. Jim Keady lives in New York, plays goalie for a professional soccer team, and coaches soccer for St. Johns. St. Johns was offered 3.5 million dollars and free equipment if they advertised for Nike. The players would all have to wear Nike and use Nike equipment. Jim was very mad because he does not believe in the way the factory workers are paid. He decided to do a project with a girl named Leslie Kretzu. Together, they went to Indonesia, where Nike headquarters is located. They were both going to live in Indonesia for a month on the average Nike factory workers wage of $1.25 per day. All this could buy was three small meals and a bottle of cleaner. During there time there they each lost at least 25 pounds and were in very poor condition. Leslie got sick multiple times and they found out that Nike factories are ordered to dump their scrap parts (mostly plastic and rubber) into a large area. This area happens to be the play area for most kids. later they burn the large piles of scraps putting deadly chemicals in the air where children play causing many sicknesses throughout the kids. When they got back, they talked to the the CEO of Nike, Phil Knight, and he said he didn't care and he wasn't going to do anything about the conditions in Indonesia.

We also talked about globalization and how america was making money off of McDonalds in China and Japan!

3 video facts

1.  The U.S department of labor estimates that today's learner will have 10 - 14 jobs by the age of 38. I think this is crazy! I think there is no way I will have 10 jobs by the time i'm 38! I think I might have three at the most. With today's economy I don't think that many jobs will be available.

2.  The top 10 most in-demand jobs in 2010, did not exist in 2004. I think that means that technology is advancing fast so the best jobs now wont even be there by the time we are able to get a job, but there is going to be better more advanced jobs.

3.  Predictions are that by 2049 a 1,000$ computer will exceed the computational capabilities of the entire human species. I believe this because we have progressed so much over the past 10 years and this is talking about 36 years from now. If this follows through, it could change the world in a critical time for our generation.

Yes i'm watching the game! I bet money on the broncos winning by 10... i don't think that is going to happen anymore...Never mind YES IT IS!

Today's Class

Today in class Mr. Schick got mad because there weren't a lot of people participating in class and he threatened to give us all essays. He said tomorrow must be better, and i think it will. I am however frustrated that Steven was moved to a seat further away. I will try harder to participate in class. uh, THE END.

Class

In class today Mr. Schick read us an interesting story called Letter to Garcia. I think it was pretty weird but that's my opinion. The story took place during McKinley presidency. President McKinley wanted some one to carry a message to another military general, Garcia, and with out questions the man carried the letter go Garcia.  I think the same concept applies to today's success requirements, the man who can carry the message to Garcia will be the one every business and store across the world wants.
